In Greek mythology, Sisyphus or Sisyphos (/ ˈsɪsɪfəs /; Ancient Greek: Σίσυφος Sísuphos) was the king of Ephyra (now known as Corinth). He was punished for his self-glorifying cunning and deceit by being forced to roll an immense rock up the hill so that each time he approached the top, he rolled down and repeated this action for eternity.
According to solar theory, King Sisyphus is the disc of the sun that rises every day in the east and then sinks to the west. Other scholars regard him as a personification of rising and setting waves or of the treacherous sea. The epicurean philosopher Lucretius from the 1st century B.C. interprets the myth of Sisyphus as the personification of politicians striving for a political office that is constantly defeated, where the quest for power is in itself an "empty thing" that is compared to rolling the rock on the hill.
Antonio Zanchi (6 December 1631 - 12 April 1722) was an Italian Baroque painter, mainly active in Venice.
