Sepia drawing of the Haarlemmerstraat in Leiden Netherlands Pen and ink drawing.
The Haarlemmerstraat is the main shopping street of the Dutch city of Leiden, with many large chain stores. The street is located in the city centre, in the De Camp and Maredorp districts, and is over 1 kilometre long.
The name refers to the old road that ran from the now demolished Haarlemmerpoort (near the present Museum Volkenkunde) via the former villages Poel and Vijfhuizen (near the roundabout where now the Geversstraat connects to the Rhijngeesterstraatweg) over the dry beach ridge via the old village Oegstgeest (near the Groene Kerkje) and Sassenheim finally to Haarlem. The Haarlemmerstraat was also part of the main east-west connection over the northern, low dike along the Rhine. In Leiden the street follows downstream (east-west) after the Lage Rijndijk and the Haven. After the Haarlemmerstraat follows the Morsstraat, Morsweg and Hoge Morsweg. The Breestraat, the second shopping street, is its counterpart on the southern Hoge Rijndijk.
As a child, there was already a predilection for visual art. As a technician, I was always creative in products, services and working methods. In later years, more time was taken for my art (photography) passion.
