Unique handmade portrait of Peter R. de Vries on discarded wood
Peter Rudolf de Vries (Aalsmeer, November 14, 1956 - Amsterdam, July 15, 2021) was a Dutch crime reporter. He became known mainly for the self-devised television program Peter R. de Vries, crime reporter, which stopped in 2012, after seventeen years. After that he enjoyed a reputation in the Netherlands as a steadfast booster of cold cases and was a frequent guest in talk shows where he shed light on numerous cases.
In the 1980s, De Vries wrote two books about the kidnapping of Freddy Heineken and tracked down one of the kidnappers, Frans Meijer, in Paraguay. Later he testified against Willem Holleeder in a new criminal case. He devoted himself to the Twee van Putten, wrongfully convicted of the rape and murder of a 23-year old stewardess. It was thanks to his tenacity that the sentence was revised, in which the two were acquitted after all.
De Vries also revealed that Mabel Wisse Smit had maintained closer contacts with the criminal Klaas Bruinsma than she had admitted. Because of this the Dutch Prince Friso van Oranje-Nassau van Amsberg eventually lost his rights to the throne. De Vries received an Emmy Award in 2008 for a television report in which Joran van der Sloot, in a car with hidden cameras, made statements about his alleged involvement in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.
