Portrait of an indigenous woman

Zoë Hoetmer Profile picture I have a passion for antiquity and I'm very nostalgic. That's why I like to work from my love for painting. I give them a contemporary look and embrace the classical style.

An illustration of an indigenous woman, a fictional representation of a traditionally dressed woman.

To this day, indigenous peoples are still often the victims of various forms of discrimination. After the First World War, many began to doubt the morality of "civilized"people. At the same time, the anti-colonial movement argued that words such as 'civilized' and 'primitive' were products of colonialism, and argued that colonialism itself was destructive. It was not until the middle of the 20th century that European attitudes began to shift towards the view that indigenous peoples should have the right to decide for themselves what would happen to their ancient cultures and ancestral lands.

Illustrator and specialist painter
I work very realistically and get inspiration from the everyday for my work. I combine a touch of fantasy with observation. Because of my painting background I have a love for imitation and precision. I start from my own perspective and I find it important to incorporate my interests in my illustrations. Not afraid to get my hands dirty, and a neat worker!

Training courses
Utrecht School of the Arts, 2020. Direction illustration, with Honours.
The Nimeto in Utrecht, 2016. Specialist restoration and decoration painter, Cum laude.
