This is the Overmaasse steeg, an alley in the old centre of Schiedam. The alley, slightly kinked, slopes up from Lange Haven to Hoogstraat. The oblique lines, from the kink and the slope but also from the shutters on the left and from the quay wall rising to the Nieuwe Sluis, make it an interesting image.
What is further striking is that the image is rather timeless. The picture was taken 2020 but there is nothing to suggest it was not 1920. Although it could be that a century ago, the buildings looked less beautifully refurbished. And possibly the streets are quieter today than they were then. But that silence, and the absence of mopeds, garbage cans, traffic signs and other disturbing elements, do add to the sense of timelessness.
