Seals (Phocidae) are a family of marine mammals. They belong to the predators (Carnivora). About 90% of the roughly 11,000 seals in the Netherlands can be found in the Wadden Sea; there are also populations in the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde, among other places. In Belgium, due to the tight coastline, they are rarely seen. Young seals that have lost their mother are also called howlers. Seals are usually white when they are born.
