Serpents are a group of lizard-like reptiles belonging to the order Squamata. All species are characterized by a comparatively very long and thin body and the absence of limbs. Snakes are clearly distinguishable from all other animals and most other reptiles as crocodilians, turtles and bridge lizards. With some groups of lizards, however, the distinction is not so clear.
About 3900 different species of snakes have been described, of which about 15% are venomous.[4] Snakes always move around on their abdomen and their skin is completely covered with scales. Other typical characteristics are the lack of movable eyelids and the adapted paired organs like the lungs and kidneys.
Snakes occur almost worldwide and the different species live in a variety of habitats. Because they are cold-blooded, most species live in warmer regions. A number of species are adapted to living in extremely dry environments, such as deserts. However, there are also snakes that live underground and dig a lot or are strongly adapted to living in watery environments such as rivers, lakes and even the sea.
Because of their long misunderstood way of life and behaviour and their supposed, but often overestimated toxicity, snakes are a symbol of evil. In the Bible, the snake appears as a representative of the devil in the story
