About ‘Shining in the night’ by Sander Poppe

Well before sunrise, as night slowly gave way to the first morning light, I walked towards the striking Breskens lighthouse on the Zeeland coast. The wind whipped vigorously through the dunes and the cloudy sky moved rapidly above me. A restless night in a holiday home had not stopped me - so I know this place in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen like the back of my hand.

With my landscape photography equipment at the ready, I prepared myself for a new series of images. The sunrise did not promise spectacular colours, but my very first photo, technically still taken at night, turned out to be the best of the whole morning. The soft light from the lighthouse, shining over the sea, gave the picture a unique atmosphere.

This moment, surrounded by wind, waves and the sound of the sea, reminds me why I love coastal photography so much: blowing out, breathing in the salty air, and enjoying the tranquillity. For me, the Breskens lighthouse remains an enduring icon of Zeeland's powerful and timeless beauty.
