Walking towards Roma Termini, the main railway station in Rome, Italy, you pass rows of shops and street markets. Emerging from one of the streets this scene greets you. The beautiful bell tower of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, towering over everything. It makes you feel quite giddy just for a moment as you stop and look up.
It is not surprising it has that impact. The church is a Papal major basilica and the largest Catholic Marian church in Rome. There are only four major basilicas, granted by apostolic decree.
For the tourists swarming out of the main railway station and heading in this direction it is the first wow moment that Romes architecture offers. Photo art.
