For several years I participated in The difference of 25 (https://difference25.blogspot.com), an initiative of Roos Kluvers. Every month she came up with a new theme and the 25 participants could draw, paint, sculpt, take pictures, whatever they wanted, based on this theme. We mailed our artworks to Roos and she made a collage of all the artworks at the end of the month. So we all worked with one and the same theme, but the artworks differed enormously: thus The Difference of 25.
Within this project, I made this collage with sunflower and self-created vase in March 2014. It was "Theme 27 Sunflowers". Rose wrote with it that many artists were inspired by these big flowers. And so it is! And I love them, too! Van Gogh, for example, made several paintings with sunflowers. He made a study of them, painted them lying on the ground and later as a bouquet in a vase. Van Gogh made four different paintings, but was satisfied with two of them. Later he painted 3 copies of these paintings. One of them hangs in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
In my image, I follow Van Gogh's quirky hand by placing the sunflower in a skewed frame. The light on the sunflower and leaf is natural sunlight, from my photograph of the flower. The purple vase I painted digitally and is entirely fantasy, as are the flowers on it. One flower I let jump happily away from the vase.
Since about 1974, I have been involved almost daily in photography, drawing (charcoal, graphite, conté, chalk, ink), painting, watercolour and/or collage making. In all these branches of visual work, I have tried a lot, found my own way, but also often had lessons from various professionals. In everything I make, I pay particular attention to form and colour, composition, shadow and light. Sometimes this makes the image very minimalistic, other times it is enormously rich. They are almost always small settings that tell a story. My approach in my work is: back to basics, the place of peace and quiet from which things grow and appear in daylight. I have been exhibiting occasionally since 1990. Would you like to know more about me? Then click on one of the green buttons below.
