Thorn in Limburg is also known as the white town. This is the fault of the French. After the noble ladies fled in 1794, the French introduced a tax based on the size of the windows. The poor population, often living in large properties that had previously belonged to rich people, could not afford this. In order to limit the size of the tax bill, the windows were bricked up. In order to hide these traces of construction ("scars of poverty"), the houses were painted white.
