About "The piercing eyes of a long-eared owl (Asio otus)"

by Moetwil en van Dijk - Fotografie

About the artwork

Long-eared owls don't rest, they roost. Especially in winter, they like to sit together in a tree. A little pressed against the trunk so they are one with the tree and almost invisible.

The long-eared owl (Asio otus) is a medium-sized owl that stands out for its bright orange eyes and distinctive ear tufts. Those long ear tufts are not real ears, by the way. Its scientific name means "ear owl. It gets its name from its resemblance to a "ranse," Middle Dutch for "hat with a hood that hung in folds. Its eyes are a beautiful bright orange-yellow.
