The ruins of Petra in Jordan, the 2,000-year-old trading city of the Nabataeans that also housed kings, is a magnificent, but also mysterious architectural wonder of the world. Situated in a gorge in the hills, the city is partly carved out of the rock. The historic city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985, pictured is the Khazneh (treasure chamber). This building is a tomb temple built in 85 BC and 84 BC, probably commissioned by King Aretas III of the Nabataeans. The facade, executed in a double Corinthian order, is 40 metres high and 25 metres wide.
