Trees in the Dead Valley in Namibia.
Dodevlei is a white clay plain near the more famous Sossusvlei, in Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia. Dodevlei is surrounded by some of the highest dunes in the world, the highest of which is 300 to 400 metres high, and is situated on a sandstone terrace. The clay plain was formed after rainfall when the Tsauchab River flooded, creating shallow pools where the acacias could grow in the abundance of water. When the climate changed, the area was plagued by drought, sand dunes surrounded the plain, blocking the river's water flow. Because there was not enough water in the trees, they died, although a number of plant species can survive on the moisture from the morning fog and the little rainfall, such as the salsola and inara. The remaining skeletons of the trees, which are said to be about 900 years old, are blackened by the sun. Although they are not petrified, they do not perish because it is too dry.
