Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez or Velázquez for short was a Spanish painter who worked as court painter to Spain's King Philip IV, for whom he produced many portraits of the royal family, as well as some religious paintings, genre pieces and other works.

Appropriated art such as this work is the appropriation of someone else's artwork in order to make a new art, gain new inspirations, contexts and compositions. A form of art-making that many artists have made their own. Some famous examples are a Pieta by Van Gogh or the Marlboro series by Richard Prince.
