It's eight o'clock, Rotterdam is waking up. And part of Rotterdam is of course already awake earlier but at eight o'clock in early January it is still so dark that it might as well be the middle of the night. Were it not for the fact that in the residential towers, on the ships and on the construction sites around the Wijnhaven, a multitude of light sources show that many people are already active.
The Wijnhaven is part of Rotterdam's seventeenth-century urban expansion, similar to Amsterdam's ring of canals. The canal houses and warehouses along the quays were destroyed in the bombing on 14 May 1940.
After the war, this area was a dull office district for decades, but this has changed in the last 20 years. A good number of residential buildings have shot up in height and new towers are already under construction. Along the quay are cafés, restaurants and hotels; the floating colossus to the right of centre is also a hotel.
In short, there is a lot going on in and around the Wijnhaven, and on this cold but windless morning everything is beautifully reflected in the mirror-smooth water.
My work can be found in the border regions of photography, painting and computer visuals. With my company 3Develop I do work in commission but I use the same techniques, skills and software to make free work.
