About ‘Fanal Forest, II’ by Anneke Hooijer

When in Madeira, don't miss the Fanal Forest. Fanal Forest, also known as Laurisilva, is one of the most mysterious places on the island. This forest consists mainly of laurel trees and is one of the last laurel forests in the world. As a result, this primeval forest is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is therefore well protected. These trees grew on the island (and in large parts of the rest of Europe) millions of years ago, so you really do step into a piece of prehistory.
In less beautiful weather, chances are that the forest is shrouded in mist, which adds immensely to the fairytale and mysterious feel of this place.
