About the artwork

The Pak Ou Caves, also known as Tham Ting and Tham Theung, are important Buddhist sites in Laos, located at the mouth of the Nam Ou River into the Mekong, opposite the village of Pak-Ou. The Pak Ou Caves have a history dating back thousands of years. It is believed that the caves have been visited by pilgrims and now tourists since the 16th century. Legend has it that the cave temple was built on the opposite side of the river in 1547 by King Setthathirat on the occasion of the founding of the village of Vak Pal Ou. It is said that the statues were kept in this sacred place by locals hundreds of years ago. The Pak Ou Caves are an important religious site and are one of the most respected sacred sites in Laos. They are home to over 4000 Buddha statues, which are located on a cliff together with a shrine to the river spirit, majestically overlooking the Mekong Delta. The statues were left as offerings by pilgrims over the years. The caves can only be reached by a typical Laotian longtail boat from the city centre. The crossing takes around 2 hours and is one of the most beautiful experiences you can have in Luang Prabang. The Pak Ou Caves are not only an important religious site, but also a major tourist attraction. They attract visitors from all over the world who want to explore the breathtaking river landscape and at the same time gain an insight into the fascinating culture of Laos. The Pak Ou Caves are a fascinating piece of history and culture. They offer a unique insight into the spiritual heart of Laos and the cultural heritage of the region.
