Rippling water over rocks is the inspiration for this painting. It can be the water of a lake or the sea; symbolically represented in ponds or gravel in Japanese gardens.
Here, a modern interpretation of the Japanese sumi-e style using coloured ink is applied. Originally, sumi-e is painted with black ink only, ranging from pure black to the lightest grey by mixing the ink with water.
True sumi-e is about simplicity and spontaneity, any unnecessary detail is omitted. This method of painting was introduced in Japan by Zen monks and quickly became a success because in this painting method, as in Zen, reality is reduced to its pure, naked form. No retouching or embellishments. We strive to capture the essence so that we can penetrate to the core of reality.
Imagine yourself on the Japanese coast and listen to the rippling water.
