The sound of rippling water captured in images. Inspired by Japanese sumi-e art, but executed here as if on canvas instead of rice paper.
It strives for simplicity and spontaneity, leaving out every unnecessary detail. Almost abstract yet very recognisable, you can see the swell of the waves in the water. In the spirit of sumi-e, no enhancements or embellishments have been made. What from a distance seem to represent ripples in the waves, up close turns out to be the canvas shining through the colour.
Sumi-e painting was introduced in Japan by Zen monks and quickly became a success because in this painting method, as in Zen, reality is reduced to its pure, naked form. We strive to capture the essence so that we can penetrate to the core of reality.
Here the essence of water. The river widening and changing from wildly flowing to babbling represents the fading away of wild youth. Finally, the river ends in a calm expanse of water, the time when one can fully indulge in meditation without worries about earthly existence.
