Striped Towel, Soft Horizon

There is a hush in this painting, the kind you feel before words arrive. A woman stands alone on a sandy dune, her dark blue dress caught mid-breath by the wind. She faces the sea, and we sense she has been standing there a while, watching the gray waves fold and unfold against the shore. Above her, a striped beach umbrella leans like a quiet companion, sheltering nothing but memory.

Around her feet, golden dune grass bends and trembles. Scattered seashells rest in the sand, small relics of tides long gone, while a woven wicker basket waits nearby, its draped cloth softened by the salt air. Overhead, seagulls drift across a sky heavy with dramatic clouds, their wings carrying the day toward dusk.

The palette is cool and earthy, blues melting into beige and pale gold. Loose, textured brushstrokes let the wind feel real, the ocean feel restless, the moment feel fragile. This is solitude rendered with tenderness, a meditation on stillness and longing.

We do not know what she sees out there. Perhaps that is the point. In her quiet gazing, we recognize something of ourselves, the ache and comfort of being alone with the sea.
