Rotterdam has gained a number of icons since 1960, when the Euromast was built to a design by architect Huig Maaskant. But back then, in the 1960s, the mast stood at a lonely height. Literally too, because for several years the Euromast was the tallest building in the city.
After the construction of the medical faculty, a stone's throw away, the tower lost that number one position. But no problem: a piece was simply put on top: the spacetower, also known as the euroscope.
Nowadays, even that extension is no longer sufficient, as the Zalmhaven Tower, for instance, is already about 30 metres higher. And with several even higher towers in the pipeline, height is definitely getting out of reach as a "unique selling point".
But as an urban icon, the Euromast is still popular, both with Rotterdammers and tourists. And the view is still magnificent.
We see the mast here on a beautiful autumn day. The golden yellow foliage of a tree in the Park curls around the Crow's Nest, at least to the eye. A friendly cloud and a plane stripe add some character to the otherwise sleek blue sky.
