Behind Closed Eyes

The work depicts a stylised close-up of a face, composed of photographic details, organic patches of colour and distinct textures. A closed eye forms the serene focal point. The long, dark eyelashes stand out sharply against light skin tones, lending the portrait a tranquil, almost meditative air. The nose and full lips remain recognisable, whilst other parts of the face fade into abstract forms. The combination of deep blue-black, cream, terracotta and warm orange is striking. The curved areas of colour partly follow the contours of the face, yet at the same time take on their own graphic direction. In particular, the rust-orange streak running down from the forehead past the eye draws the eye through the composition. At the edges, dark areas provide a powerful frame.
On closer inspection, the rich surface texture is striking. The skin appears almost weathered or cracked, whilst other sections are reminiscent of painted wood, plaster or paper. Even the eyebrow and individual eyelashes retain their fine detail against this rough background.
The work thus strikes a balance between portraiture and abstract art. The closed eye suggests introspection and contemplation, whilst the powerful forms add a modern, graphic energy. An image of beauty shaped not by perfection, but rather by fragmentation and layering.
