Jeroen de Jongh Profile picture Westkapelle is a village, with historical status as a town, in the municipality of Veere on the western tip of the former island of Walcheren. It is therefore located in the Dutch province of Zeeland.

Westkapelle may have been founded in the time of the Vikings. The local dialect contains accents that can also be heard by Scandinavians. The settlement was granted city rights in 1223 but had no seat in the States of Zeeland, which is why it was called a narrow city. The city lived mainly from fishing (herring).

In 1400 a storm tide swept away the Western Cape, putting an end to the prosperity of Westkapelle. At that time the construction of the Westkapelse Zeedijk was started, in 1454 the city was sold to Heer Hendrik van Veere. Emperor Charles V visited the town in 1540. Until 1996 Westkapelle was an independent municipality. Remnant of the time when Westkapelle was a small town, is the annual fair with the accompanying Gaaischieters gunnery.

Welcome to my shop. I, an Amsterdam born and raised guy with an international mindset (hence the introduction in English), had the choice between offering you a nice catchphrase, or nice photos. I chose the latter. So enjoy, and I hope you will find something from my humble shop that you would love to have on one of your walls.
