Cubist Jazz Duet

Two saxophonists share the canvas in this vivid Cubist oil painting, their forms fragmented into a dynamic puzzle of geometric planes. Angular faces, blocky hands, and overlapping instruments emerge from a rich palette of ochre, burnt sienna, and terracotta, punctuated by cool accents of muted blue, gray, and cream.

The figures stand in close diagonal alignment, their bodies inseparable from the background behind them. Rather than receding into empty space, the backdrop fractures into the same triangles, trapezoids, and rectangles that define the musicians themselves — clothing, skin, and wall becoming one unified field of movement. This visual merging is the painting's greatest strength: you feel the music before you locate its source.

Strong black outlines carve through the composition in sharp, intersecting lines, while visible impasto brushwork and etched marks in the lower corners add raw, tactile energy. The bell of the larger saxophone curves boldly toward the center, anchoring the composition, as the second instrument overlaps it from behind.

The result is less a portrait and more a sensation — the restless, improvisational spirit of jazz translated into color and form. Every fractured plane hums with rhythm, every angular edge suggests a note held just a beat too long.
