When you walk through the narrow streets and along the quays in Venice, you can't escape it: the many gondolas! The beautiful, graceful boats take many tourists every year to let them enjoy a nice trip on the many canals, along the many historic alleys and old buildings.
The gondolas in the photo are located on the quay near St. Mark's Square. And in a way you see a unique image here: a whole row of gondolas without people. I took the photo on a Sunday afternoon, in corona time and it was quiet in the city for Venetian standards as there were hardly any people from outside Europe to be seen. The gondolas on the quay were not used much, while Venice is normally overrun with tourists.
The trip that we made ourselves with a gondola, went very smoothly. The gondolier told us we were lucky, because in normal times the boats sail closer together and the gondolier sometimes has to stop and wait before he can continue. We were indeed not bothered by that, we could sail well and enjoy the nice alleys and streets.
In the background in the photo, the island of San Giorgio Maggiore can be seen with its large bell tower. The tower can be climbed and from there you have a beautiful view over Venice and the nearby islands.
I enjoy taking pictures of nature, from colorful flowers to the vast landscapes of Scotland and Norway. Photos of European cities can also be found in my shop. Whatever photos they are, I create them with the idea that they really add atmosphere to your home or workplace.
