About ‘Gullfoss’ by Lex Schulte

Panorama of Gullfoss, the golden waterfall of Iceland. The Gullfoss is a waterfall in the Hvítá river (White River) in southern Iceland. It is one of Iceland's most popular waterfalls and is easy to reach (by car). The waterfall is part of the Golden Circle, a favorite tour along Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, which is one of Iceland's most famous Icelandic tourist destinations. The Gullfosskloof. The water falls into two steps, which are more or less perpendicular to each other, 32 meters down in a gap which is also fully on the second stage. The stairs are formed by hard layers of basalt that alternate with softer materials. These separate layers are also well recognized in the walls of the gap. The gap is more than 70 meters deep, 20 meters wide and 2.5 kilometers long. The Hvítá is a glacier river, which is also fed by rain and can transport large amounts of water (50-110 m³ / sec in winter to 100-180 m³ / sec in summer). The water crumbling in the gorge almost always causes a large amount of polluted water, which, when the sun shines, causes beautiful rainbows. The Gullfoss thanks to this: Golden waterfall. It is possible to get all the way to the edge of the waterfall where the thunderous noise is overwhelming. If the steep path (which is only deposited with a thin string) is in winter, it may be a daunting business.
