These stately houses on the promenade of Mers-les-Bains stand on the Atlantic coast in northern France. Mers-les-Bains is a picturesque village on the bay of e Somme. In the late 19th century, a railway line was built between Paris and Mers-les-Bains. It was the time of the Belle Epoque; wealthy Parisians discovered the charming seaside resort and built, among other things, these beautiful holiday homes. They were decorated with metal, wooden or iron balconies, colourful facades and lavish decorations. This is how the Quartier-Balneare district was created, almost entirely in art nouveau style. Today, this district still boasts some 300 villas from that era. Nowhere else along the French coast will you find such a neighbourhood. Some of these houses overlook the sea, forming a beautiful street scene from the bouelvard. If you look closely, you can see the influence of sea and wind on the facades. The warm summer day and the clear blue sky give the photo a summery feel.
