Oldsmobile Toronado at Autumn Sunset

When I first began this painting, I wanted to capture a moment of stillness after a long journey. A 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado rests on a dusty dirt path, its deep metallic plum body glowing beneath the last light of day. I painted the sun low on the right, so its warmth could spill across the hood, the roof, and the curve of each fender.

The chrome grille and slotted hubcaps became small mirrors for me, catching flashes of gold against the darker shadows beneath the car. I loved tracing that sleek fastback roofline, a shape that still feels bold and confident decades later.

Around the car, I let my brush move more freely. Thick impasto strokes, where the paint sits raised on the canvas, shape the earth, the rust-red autumn foliage, and the rolling hills. A winding road drifts toward the horizon, empty and inviting, while the sky burns in golden orange and cream before fading into soft blue and violet.

For me, this painting is about pausing between where we have been and where we are going. I hope it invites you to stand beside me on that road, feeling the same quiet pull of freedom we all share.
