A magical morning on the Leersum field. The sun rises over the field and colours everything beautifully orange. How wonderful it is to be outside at sunrise!
The Leersumse Veld is the quietest place in the Netherlands. Carved out in the ice age by meltwater in the lateral moraine now called Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Deforestation and overgrazing depleted the soil over centuries. The Leersumse Veld became an area of drifting sand and heathland, which turned to peat in wet places.
Around the 18th century, the peat was excavated for fuel. This created the Leersumse Plassen. The heathland is grazed by a herd of Piedmontese cows. A stately oak-linden avenue and old rhododendron bushes recall the days when there was a country estate here. The ponds attract many dragonflies and birds, which you can observe from a bird-watching hut near the third pond. You can also take beautiful and quiet walks here.
