About ‘Otter — First Light Becoming’ by Manuela Dekkers

This work depicts a young otter at the water's edge, bathed in the soft light of early morning. The surroundings are quiet and misty; the water reflects the first rays of sunlight as the day gently dawns. Everything in this image exudes curiosity, vulnerability and new beginnings.

The otter is alert but uninhibited. It looks at the world with an open gaze, without hesitation or haste. In this moment, it does not yet need to know or control anything — it can simply be where it is. The animal embodies playful vitality and confidence, a first step into a world that is yet to be discovered.

Within the First Light Kin collection, this work represents the beginning of experience. Where other images speak of silence or surrender, the otter brings a gentle curiosity: the willingness to encounter the unknown without fear. Dawn symbolises a new chapter; the young otter represents the courage to enter that chapter with openness.

This artwork invites us not to skip the beginning. To make room for wonder and playfulness, even in transitional phases. A tranquil, warm work that brings lightness to a space and reminds us of the power of a gentle start.
