Sad angel woman

The painting ‘Sad Angel Woman’ depicts a woman viewed head-on, with two wings rising behind her in perfect symmetry like a luminous arch. Her head is gently bowed, her hair pulled tightly back, whilst her hands rest clasped against her chest. A thin white robe envelops her body and falls in loose folds to the floor, almost glowing against the completely black surroundings. Only a subtle light source from the front sharply defines her silhouette and the contours of her wings, without revealing anything else of the space around her.

The symmetry of the composition, combined with the overwhelming whiteness of the wings against such darkness, creates a penetrating, almost heavenly tranquillity. That striking interplay of light and dark, together with the moving, vulnerable pose, is what makes this scene appear as a particularly powerful work, no matter which wall it hangs on. Even the tiniest feathers at the edges of the wings are visible with remarkable precision.

Her posture is reminiscent of a moment of prayer or surrender, as if grief has brought her to a complete standstill for a moment. The perfect symmetry of the wings stands in stark contrast to the vulnerability of her bent neck, and it is precisely this interplay that makes the emotion so palpable. Nothing is explained, and yet you immediately understand what this moment is about. Such a'and understated, symbolic image calls for a place where it can be viewed undisturbed, far from the hustle and bustle and distractions. Available to order in multiple formats and on various materials, the expressive power of the contrast is preserved, from a small print to an impressively large format.
