There are those moments in nature that, as a photographer, you never forget. This photo of a singing bluethroat is one of them. Every spring I return to the Egmond dunes in search of this one special bird. For me, the bluethroat - with its brightly coloured breast and clear song - is the symbol of the budding season. What makes this bird extra special is its loyalty to one specific spot: year after year, it chooses the same buckthorn bush as its singing post to lure a mate.
To capture this image, my work began well before the time of printing. I observed its behaviour and paid attention to the light. Then I chose a position where I could sit inconspicuously, camouflaged. Hours passed.
And then it happened. The bluebird landed, right in the spot I had expected. It raised its head, put its breast forward, and began to sing. A beautiful, clear sound filled the air. At that same moment, the soft morning light fell just right in the background. The colours became warm and subtle, the atmosphere serene. Everything made sense. It was as if nature gave me this moment as a gift.
For me, this photo is not just an image - it is a story of preparation, patience and a deep respect for the rhythms of nature.
