Stepantsminda and the holy mountain Kasbek

resuimages Profile picture Behind green mountain landscapes it rises majestically, covered by a shining white crown of snow: the legendary Kazbek. It is Georgia's third highest mountain. At 5,054 metres, the extinct volcano rises imposingly into the sky. The peak of the Kazbek is the eighth highest mountain in the Great Caucasus, the over 1,100-kilometre-long mountain range between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. On its ridge runs the state border between Georgia and neighbouring Russia. The magic of an entire country seems to unite in the proudly towering peak. Georgia is not only characterised by untouched nature and fantastic mountain panoramas, but also by the deep faith of its inhabitants. For the inhabitants of Georgia, Mount Kazbek is much more than just a mountain. They reverently call it the peak of longing or the mountain of destiny. It is an extremely important religious, almost sacred, place whose significance is deeply rooted in their culture and faith. But it is not only Christians who pay homage to the peak of Kasbek: the mountain was already an important setting in Greek mythology. Right here, the gods are said to have forged the hated Prometheus with chains because he had stolen fire from them and thus brought light to mankind.
