The embers of the evening

Annette Schmucker’s abstract painting “Ember of Evening” captures the glowing intensity of a fading day in an almost tangible, energetic way. As the name suggests, a fiery colour spectrum of deep orange, glowing scarlet and warm golden tones dominates the centre of the picture, which resembles the smouldering embers of a fire that has just gone out. This “evening glow” is set against high-contrast, dark shades of violet and anthracite, which spread across the canvas from the edges like the approaching night. Through the masterful use of layers of resin, a glass-like, almost liquid-seeming surface is created, which refracts the light and lends the warm colours an extraordinary radiance. Schematic vertical lines run through the composition and could be interpreted as distant tree silhouettes or descending shadows, lending a subtle structure to the abstract space. Delicate reflections of light and golden speckles float in the air like a shower of sparks, reinforcing the impression of a dynamic, ever-changing moment. The flowing application of paint using the sfumato technique allows the embers-red areas to merge softly into the dark periphery, creating a powerful atmospheric pull. Despite the fiery colour palette, the work radiates a deep sense of security and the tranquillity of a fading day. The three-dimensionality of the layers allows the viewer to literally immerse themselves in the warmth of the twilight and experience the element of light as a physical presence. Overall, ‘Ember of Evening’ is a powerful visual metaphor for the transition between the heat of the day and the cool stillness of the night. Once again, Schmucker succeeds in capturing the ephemeral nature of light in a lasting, luminous form.
