The shepherd and the bird

"The shepherd on the rocks and the bird" is an expressive acrylic painting by Dutch artist, illustrator and writer Hans Sturris, known for his unique combination of fine art and strong storytelling. In this work, Sturris depicts a landscape that not only wants to be seen, but also read - as if it were a story slowly unfolding between colour and line.

In the foreground, a rugged mountain landscape unfolds, composed of warm and cool areas of colour moving against each other like a mosaic. The rich textures and layered brushstrokes create a dynamic depth, as if the rocks seem to be in constant motion. Amid this violence of colour, a small shepherd, calm and confident, stands atop a rocky plateau. His silhouette provides a quiet counterbalance to the wild shapes around him and gives the painting a meditative core.

In the sky floats a bird, a symbol of freedom, direction and perhaps hope. Together with the shepherd, it forms a subtle narrative in which man and nature seem to be in balance. The soft, pale pink and gold sky enhances that atmosphere and gives the work a dreamy, almost spiritual feel.

Hans invites the viewer not only to see this landscape, but also to feel it. The semi-illustrative style makes this work a perfect balance between atmosphere and story: a visual narrative that invites the viewer to add their own meaning.
