Who gets the apple this autumn?

There are two apples here, two birds and a pile of books. It’s clearly autumn here. The landscape, set in a wood, is cloaked in beautiful autumn colours. A large portion of the foliage has already fallen to the ground, forming a lovely blanket. Right in the middle of those leaves, someone has left a pile of books. It looks as though it’s been there for quite some time. On top of that pile, someone has left an apple. After all, in a wood, apples don’t exactly fall from the sky. That apple on the pile of books has been snatched by a bird. A second bird finds the sight interesting, and, above all, appetising. That apple takes its fancy too. The apple on the ground is completely overlooked – overlooked entirely, in fact – because the focus is on the apple on top of that large pile of books. Those books might well tell the rest of this story. This surrealist work naturally features autumnal colours, namely red, orange, yellow, green, brown, black and cream.
