Between Shadow and Form

This modern abstract portrait depicts a woman’s face in which figurative details and sharp geometric planes of colour merge. The face is only partially visible: the nose and lips retain their natural, almost tangible form, whilst the rest is intersected by bold blocks of colour in terracotta, black, deep dark blue and off-white. This creates a fascinating interplay between recognition and abstraction.

The eyes disappear completely behind dark shapes, lending the work a mysterious and introspective air. A striking feature is the narrow, light band that runs down from the forehead along the nose. This shape acts almost like a beam of light and forms a stark contrast with the dark area on the left-hand side. The warm terracotta-coloured lips then form a subtle yet powerful focal point. Up close, the fine textures of the skin and paint are also striking, lending the clean geometry a surprisingly tactile softness.

The asymmetrical composition and angular lines give the portrait a distinctly modern and graphic appearance, whilst the earthy colours add warmth and elegance. The work strikes a balance between figurative art, geometric abstraction and minimalism, and fits particularly well into a modern, mid-century or eclectic interior. A striking work of art in which identity, mystery and form come together in an intriguing way.
