Black Swallowtail Butterfly Caterpillar - a mature black swallowtail butterfly caterpillar bright green, yellow and black colors are its mark. The background is a dark purple and in front of the caterpillar is a yellow fennel flower.
We plant extra dill, parsley and fennel to ensure the butterflies can lay their eggs and the caterpillars have plenty of food. Often we take the caterpillars and put them into a protective butterfly habitat to protect them from the birds. We feed them until they cocoon and release them.
This little caterpillar was very happy posing for me during its mealtime. They do let you know when they are aggravated by showing their tiny horns to warn you off. The view is from a 45 degree angle.
