About the artwork

Church of den Hoorn on Texel during the blue hour. Nice and quiet and beautiful light! This church is the most photographed church in the Netherlands.

The Reformed Church in Den Hoorn (Texel) is a striking church building from 1425 with a white tower. The wooden chapel at this location was demolished in 1409.

In 1450 the tower was built against the west wall (and partly in the nave). In 1604 the interior was destroyed by the Sea Beggars.

The church still consists of only three bays. In fact, the choir section was demolished in 1641 and the nave was closed by the stone gable in 1646. On that wall is still the date 1646. But the church itself is much older.

The church is located at the northern edge of the village. However, the church used to be in the center; in the last few centuries (after the heyday of piloting ships) many houses have been demolished due to vacancy.

On the balustrade of the church tower is a floodlight attached which serves as a beacon for shipping on the Schulpengat.

The church organ was built in 1857 by the Zwolle organ builders firm J.C. Scheuer & Zonen. It has one manual, eight stops and an attached pedal.

The church building is a national monument.
