DAF 55 on a Winding Road at Sunset

When I paint the DAF 55, I paint more than a car. I paint a memory many of us share: the slow drive home along a country road as the day lets go and the light turns gold.

I gave this modest European classic its two-tone coat of cream and deep burgundy, and let the low sun catch its chrome bumpers and round headlights. It rests on the edge of a winding dirt road, as if pausing to take in the view. Behind it, two slender poplars rise like quiet guardians, while autumn shrubs glow in orange, ochre, and rust.

The sky is where I let go. I used impasto, paint laid on thick so every stroke stays visible, to build layers of violet, charcoal, and blazing yellow that seem to move as you look. That same warm light spills down the road, carved into texture by my brush, before fading into hazy blue and purple hills.

For me, this painting celebrates ordinary journeys. The DAF was never a grand car, yet it carried families, holidays, dreams, and stories. In that modesty I recognize something we all share: the quiet longing to keep going, together, toward the warm light ahead.
