Drawing of the Kloksteeg from the Nonnenbrug in Leiden Netherlands.
Leiden is a city and municipality in the northwest of the Dutch province of South Holland. The Old Rhine flows through Leiden before emptying into the sea a little further down.
Thanks to its cloth industry, Leiden was one of the largest cities in the Northern Netherlands from the late Middle Ages until the 17th century. Today, with 124,077 inhabitants (1 January 2021), it is the fourth largest municipality in South Holland after Rotterdam, The Hague and Zoetermeer. Leiden is the centre of an agglomeration and city district that includes Katwijk.
Leiden is known as a student city; it has the oldest university in the Netherlands. It is also a tourist attraction, thanks to the nationally renowned museums and the old city centre with its canals, monumental buildings and almshouses. The nickname is the Key City, referring to the keys in the city's coat of arms.
As a child, there was already a predilection for visual art. As a technician, I was always creative in products, services and working methods. In later years, more time was taken for my art (photography) passion.
