Ladies of Summer

This atmospheric, modern painting of four women depicts a sunny stroll in which fashion, movement and female solidarity take centre stage. The figures walk forward together, dressed in flowing dresses in coral, white, warm orange and pink. Their faces remain hidden beneath strikingly large sun hats, meaning the work is not about individual portraits, but about poise, elegance and the sense of being on a journey together.

The loose, painterly brushstrokes lend the scene a spontaneous energy. The dresses, in particular, seem to come to life through their movement and an imaginary summer breeze. The wide hats create a recurring rhythm at the top of the composition, whilst the dark legs and elongated shadows add direction and dynamism to the lower part. A lovely detail is that the women partially overlap one another: this creates a sense of a close-knit group without their relationships being explicitly explained.

The almost entirely cream-coloured setting leaves much to the imagination. Is this a promenade, a sun-drenched square or a stroll towards the sea? It is precisely this absence of a specific location that gives the scene a timeless, almost dreamlike quality.

The work combines figurative art, feminine elegance, summer, fashion and modern Impressionism into a warm composition brimming with freedom, friendship and movement.
