In June 1783, the earth erupted in the south of Iceland over a length of forty kilometres. It was the largest volcanic eruption in Icelandic history, with dramatic consequences. Today Laki is one of Iceland's most beautiful sights; the landscape here resembles an abstract painting. In this image we see a remnant of the eruption, a small mossy volcano perhaps only a hundred metres high, part of a series of volcanoes forty kilometres long. The two people in the lower left corner give a good idea of scale.
