Lost in Pink

The work depicts a female portrait that seems to slowly merge into an explosion of pink, magenta and warm earthy tones. The face forms the tranquil focal point of the composition. The downcast eyes, subtly rendered mouth and soft contours lend the woman a demure, almost dreamlike air. Her gaze is turned inwards, lending the portrait a sense of stillness and intimacy. Around the face, the painting style changes strikingly. Distinctive lines give way to powerful, loose patches of colour in pink, fuchsia, dark green and ochre. Above the head in particular, an almost flower-like shape emerges. This can be interpreted as exuberant hair, a floral crown or simply as an abstract extension of the portrait. It is precisely this ambiguity that makes the work interesting.
A lovely detail is the large white area of paint in the bottom right-hand corner. At first glance, this appears to be part of her clothing, but the coarse brushstrokes give it almost the character of a large flower that she is holding close to her. The visible texture of the canvas and the irregular, sometimes transparent layers of paint emphasise its handcrafted quality.
The result lies somewhere between figurative portraiture and abstract art: femininity and softness are combined with an expressive, contemporary painting style. Moreover, the striking pink colour palette makes it a powerful statement piece on the wall.
