Silence in Cobalt Blue

This modern portrait of a woman in blue depicts a serene face in profile, constructed from layered areas of colour and elegant lines. The closed eyes and slightly downward-turning posture lend the work a calm, introspective air. The face does not appear to have been painted in a realistic style, but rather seems to emerge gradually from various shades of blue, white and sand.

The strength of the composition lies in its limited colour palette. Deep navy blue forms the background and blends almost imperceptibly into her hair, neck and clothing. Bright cobalt blue and greyish blue define the face, whilst white runs across the forehead, nose and chin like a powerful beam of light. A subtle beige patch on the cheek brings warmth to this cool colour scheme.

Particularly striking are the fine white contour lines that move loosely across the painted forms. They do not follow the face exactly everywhere, but sometimes seem to trace a second silhouette. This creates an exciting interplay between figurative portraiture and abstract art. The black eyebrows and eyelashes are also strikingly expressive and form graphic anchor points within the soft areas of colour.

The work exudes tranquillity, elegance and self-reflection. The combination of the female portrait, the interplay of lines and the monochrome shades of blue gives it a powerful, contemporary feel that fits perfectly into a modern or minimalist interior.
