Waterfall and rocks in a glass bottle

The ‘Waterfall and Rocks in a Glass Bottle’ painting fills a narrow, tall bottle almost entirely with a solid mass of rock, through the very centre of which a thin waterfall cuts its way. The water springs from just below the corked neck and plunges in a single unbroken ribbon to the bottom of the bottle, where it disappears amongst the rocks at the base. The rocks themselves are predominantly dark grey and angular, with the occasional tiny green sprig of moss nestled between the crevices. Against the black background and the sparse light from above, the whole scene seems almost to float in the darkness.

That austere interplay of grey rock and brilliant white water lends this still life a sleek, timeless refinement. It is precisely this minimalist colour scheme, combined with the ingenious idea of capturing an entire rock formation within a slender bottle, that makes this piece a sophisticated showpiece which fits perfectly into a modern setting. Even the tiniest cracks in the rock and the finest sprigs of moss can be distinguished with striking precision.

The hard, angular shapes of the rocks stand in stark contrast to the soft, flowing movement of the water between them, and it is precisely this contrast that captures the eye. Without a single bright colour, everything here revolves around texture, light and the suggestion of sound – the steady murmur of falling water that you can almost hear. It is a scene that radiates tranquillity as much as it does power.

This understated, mineral-like composition is a perfect match for a sleek, contemporary interior where detail takes precedence over bright colour. Available on various materials and in multiple sizes, the contrast between stone and water remains compelling on any scale.
