Where gold becomes jade

Annette Schmucker’s painting depicts an abstract colonnade characterised by a fascinating interplay of light, colour and form. Numerous tall, slender columns stretch across the space and appear to dissolve into the bright light in the distance. The columns are depicted only as silhouettes and lack clear contours, lending the architecture a mysterious and surreal quality. Particularly striking is the warm, golden-yellow light at the centre of the picture, which blends with cool shades of blue, turquoise and green. These colours flow seamlessly into one another and are complemented by individual brown and ochre accents. The loose, partly translucent brushstrokes create the impression that light and shadow are moving across the walls and columns. The floor in the lower part of the picture appears smooth and reflective, so that the colours and shapes of the columns seem to be mirrored in it. At the same time, the different layers of colour create a distinctive sense of depth that draws the eye into the interior of the hall. Although the colonnaded hall is not depicted realistically or in minute detail, its spatial structure is clearly discernible. Overall, the painting conveys a calm, mysterious and almost dreamlike atmosphere, inviting the viewer to let the abstract architecture and its unique play of light work their magic.
