Where the Wild Flowers Dance

The work depicts a light and airy flower meadow in which slender stems grow upwards from a vibrant, almost abstractly painted background. Each flower seems to be seeking its own space: some stand proudly above the rest, whilst others hide amongst splashes and patches of colour. This creates a natural irregularity reminiscent of a field of wildflowers rather than a carefully arranged bouquet.

The soft background of white and beige gives the composition plenty of breathing space. Against this, flowers appear in pink, lilac, yellow, orange and white, connected by extremely thin green and brown stems. The painting becomes particularly expressive towards the bottom. Splashes of paint and rough brushstrokes in black, green and earthy tones suggest earth, shade and vegetation without depicting them literally.

Particularly noteworthy are the small, spiky flower heads amongst the larger blooms. They introduce a subtle graphic rhythm into the work. The tallest flowers, too, are strikingly spaced apart, making the empty space between them just as important as the flowers themselves.

The whole strikes a beautiful balance between botanical art and abstract art. The combination of refined floral forms, visible texture and spontaneous splashes of paint gives the work a cheerful yet tranquil feel: as if a wild flower meadow were slowly dissolving into paint.
