Flatey is an islet in the Breiðafjörður in northwestern Iceland. Despite its limited size and isolated location, it has been inhabited for a thousand years, but nowadays there are only a few inhabitants in winter. The twenty-five houses in the village, well-maintained and painted in variegated colors, are used mainly as vacation homes during the short Icelandic summer.
This digital painting is an adaptation of a photograph I took there on a freezing cold day in early May. It had just snowed again; the fields and roofs were covered with a thin layer of powdered sugar. There was no one on the street and there were no signs of life in the houses either. It looked like I was in a ghost town, but one with cheerful colors. A special contrast.
